How to take care of your tattoo

The Day of Your Tattoo Appointment

Our tattoo artists will send you home with either Saniderm (AKA "second skin"), or a sterile bandage secured with medical tape. If you were sent home with the sterile bandage, remove the bandage after two hours, wash your tattoo with clean hands and warm water and antibacterial soap.

NO WASH CLOTHS OR LOOFAH SPONGES!

If you were sent home with Saniderm/ Second Skin...

Keep the second skin on for 3-5 days. Only remove the bandage early if you are experiencing irritation around the seal (you may be experiencing an allergic reaction to the adhesive) or a break in the seal (you tattoo liquids leak out from the second skin). When removing the second skin, we recommend removing it in the shower under warm water. Proceed with cleaning instructions listed below.

Routine Cleaning of Your New Tattoo

We recommend cleaning your tattoo two to three times a day with clean hands, antibacterial soap, and warm water. Air dry or pat dry with fresh paper towel, and apply a THIN layer of Aquaphor until all flaking and/or peeling is done. Less is more when moisturizing.

Itchy Tattoos

As your tattoo heals, the outer layer of skin will flake and peel. Your tattooed area becomes very itchy at this stage. Although tempting, DO NOT ITCH YOUR TATTOO. To heal the best, you want it to flake and fall off naturally. To ease the urge to itch, gently slap the tattooed area to alleviate the sensation.

Caring for Your Tattoo After It is Healed...

To uphold the beauty of your fresh ink, keep your tattoo out of the sun for four weeks. After this period, sunscreen over your tattoos will be your best friend if you want them looking good for as long as you live.

Things to Avoid

Avoid soaking your tattoo in water for long periods of time.

Avoid the ocean, sauna, hot tubs, lakes, rivers, etc. for two weeks.

Avoid potential sunburns.

If you have any questions regarding how to heal your tattoo, contact your artist directly as they have the best advixe and direction on how to properly heal their work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, we do offer walk-ins, subject to availability. However, we highly recommend booking an appointment in advance to ensure that we can accommodate your request at a time that works for you.

Once the bandage is removed, gently wash your tattoo with liquid antibacterial soap and warm water. No washcloths or sponges. Wash it until it feels like normal, wet skin. Once that's achieved you can pat it dry with a clean paper towel, then let it air dry for 5-10 minutes. apply a thin layer of aquaphor. repeat process 3-4 times a day removing previous layer of aquaphor.

Aquaphor is recommended for the first two weels, after that, you can swatch to a scent-free and dye-free ointment such as Lubiderm or Curel. Take care to rub it all the way in.

Caution when using aquaphor or other petroleum based products; too thick of application can suffocate the skin and clog hair follicles. If used correctly, Aquaphor can be a great option, especially for highly saturated tattoos.

Saniderm acts as a barrier against dirt, germs, bacteria, and friction. Saniderm works by creating a moist healing environment. It traps your body's natural healing fluids and allows oxygen to pass through, which is more effective for healing than allowing a scab to dry out. Saniderm is great because it is easy to use and makes the first few days of the process dummy proof, you can see the tattoo through it, and overall great for places that are hard to wrap with other bandages. Research shows that moist wound healing can be up to five times faster than traditional methods. However, due to allergies, Saniderm healing may not be an option for everybody.

You can leave Saniderm on for up to 5 days. Remove in the shower after running warm water on it for a few minutes to loosen up the adhesive. Wash the tattoo with scent-free soap and air dry.

Initial healing takes 7-10 days, more permanent healing takes 4-6 weeks.

The healing time for a tattoo depends on size, location, and the individual's immune system.

No rivers, lakes, oceans, backwaters, blackwaters, swamps, or jacuzzis for at least two weeks. These WILL make your tattoo fade fast, heal poorly, and greatly raises the risk of infection.

Avoid the sun as much as possible with a fresh tattoo. A sunburn will make your tattoo heal poorly. Do not put sunscreen on in the healing process, keep the tattoo covered with clothing. After it's healed, use sunscreen as the sun will age the tattoo faster.

Unless given instruction by your artist, do not re-bandage your tattoo. It doesn't need it and if you don't clean it probably, you can raise your chance of infection.

Let your scabs do their thing. If your tattoo itches you can gently slap it (it really works) or scratch around the tattoo area, not directly over it.

Always consult your physician first. Generally speaking, if you can come off of them for a couple of days, it always helps keep the bleeding down.
